Macgregor Primary School in Macgregor, ACT, has implemented the Field Officer Program, funded under the Literacy and Numeracy National Partnerships. Field Officers, as part of the school leadership team, work within the school to build teacher capacity and improve student outcomes.
Last year Macgregor Primary was selected to be one of our National Partnership Schools in literacy and numeracy. That program in the ACT, the funding has gone towards Field Officers in each of the twelve literacy and numeracy identified schools.
The Filed Officer Program at Macgregor is about our continuous focus on school improvement, so there’s many layers to our program. The first one is I’m part of the School Leadership Team. Within that we work together and collaboratively on improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for all of our students. The second layer is as a Field Officer. I work side by side with teachers, so shoulder to shoulder, on building teacher capacity, and again improving student outcomes. It can look very different depending on the teacher I’m working with and the needs they have, and the needs of their students. Particularly in my classroom, Yantina, our Literacy and Numeracy Officer, she’s given me advice and support in the areas where I felt I lacked. More than that, she’s given me confidence in what I’m doing. She’s always been there for when I need advice, but not just on the literacy and numeracy side of things, she’s there when I need support with behaviour, or with the social and emotional needs of the kids as well.
In terms of whole school improvement, we see this as a layer on school improvement practices which are foundational. In the foundation we need a student environment that works really well, we need a leadership team that’s very strong, we need to be able to set priorities, all of these things. Once we have that foundation set we can then lay things on top of that, such as the Literacy and Numeracy Field Officer Program. Something that the ACT Department of Education has ensured is that we have high quality resources such as the First Steps Program. That’s available to all schools and is resourced so that all the books and materials are provided and the training is provided. So elements like that assist the Field Officer in schools to make sure that we are modelling best practice, that we’re coaching around best practice in literacy and numeracy.
The changes we have seen have been significant. It’s certainly positive to see a build in teachers’ confidence, and while that’s affirming and we see teachers up and moving with using system endorsed resources such as First Steps, the real true gift of it all is that we’re seeing improved student outcomes.
So for our students, in terms of the goal, is that they all reach their full potential, no matter what that is, or where they come from, or what skills or background they bring to our school.
